Appointment of Chief Sangha Nayake in Western Province

The Mahanayaka Thera and the Sangha Council of the Malwatta Chapter of Siyam Nikaya has appointed former Vice-Chancellor of Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka and Deputy Editor of Sinhala Dictionary, Ven. Dr. Akuratiye Nanda Thera as the Chief Sanghanayaka of the Western Province.

This post became vacant with the passing away of Principal of Sunetradevi Pirivena, Pepiliyana the most Ven. Madagoda Sumanatissa Thera.

Ven. Nanda Thera holds an eminent academic career. He received his education at Vidyaloka Pirivena Galle and Vidyodaya Pirivena Maligakanda. Having entered the University of Kelaniya he obtained the degree of Bachelor of Arts and Degree of Master of Philosophy from the same University.

Ven. Nanda Thera holds a Diploma in Administration from the University of Cambridge as well as from the University of Manchester, U.K. He held the post of Vice Chancellor of Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka.

Presently, he is responsible for the compilation of Sinhala-English Etymological Dictionary begun by the Royal Asiatic Society Ceylon Branch and continued by the University of Sri Lanka now by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.

Ven. Nanda Thera holds several local and international posts such as Vice-presidency of Mahabodhi Society and executive position in the World Sangha Council.

He founded Civic centre and Montessori in Baddegama and initiated scholarship programmes for local impoverished children. Ven. Nanda Thera has edited several scholarly works. At present, he holds the important monastic education positions as Vice-Principal of Vidyodaya Pirivena and the Principal of F.R. Senanayake Dhamma School.
