Cleaning up SLBFE by Ananda Kannangara Strict laws will be implemented by the Ministry of Labour Relations and Foreign Employment shortly to eliminate all sort of corruption and malpractice frequently occurring in the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) when sending Sri Lankan workers for overseas jobs. It has been revealed that certain employment agents in the country and also some sub agents are indulging in numerous unlawful activities in collaboration with several officials in the Bureau. Minister Athauda Seneviratne disclosed this to a group of license holding foreign employment agents when he met them at a conference in Colombo on Thursday. Minister Seneviratne further said that numerous complaints received by him against certain job agents and some sub agents, prompted him to take stern action against them. "Offering bribes by some employment agents to certain Bureau officials to get official work done must also be eliminated for the benefit of innocent workers, seeking foreign jobs. The Minister also focused special attention on Sri Lankan housemaids who face numerous harassments due to the bad behaviour of certain employment agents and sub agents. The Minister said that he had already instructed employment agents to strictly adhere to the minimum salary of Rs. 15,000 for all housemaids in future and not to send anyone for salaries less than this stipulated amount. |
