Professionals let down nation

by Indeewara Thilakarathne

If the professionals have been constantly maintaining the highest standards of professional competence , ethics and social responsibility expected of them, the nation would have been in a far, far more advanced stage of social and economic development said Justice Mark Fernando addressing the inaugural Session of the Organisation of Professional Association of Sri Lanka held at BMICH last Friday.

He said that the OPA has chosen the apt theme of "Professional and Society" for this years sessions and that the definition of a professional in the OPA constitution could be further improved to include the continuous learning and training in a specialised subject and upgrading professional knowledge and skills.

He said that the "profession" is a vocation bounded by a code of conduct that imposes corresponding duties and obligations far in excess of those imposed by written law and that a professional should practise his or her discipline so as to be of service to the community.

The society has conferred on the professionals a high level of recognition, respect and prestige to enable them to render a service to the Community. As they are to a large extent, the product of the free education system sustained by the tax levied from the Community service to the Community is a way by which they can pay the debt owed to the society.

Justice Fernando further said that professionals must exercise a high degree of care in their work and render a punctual, expeditious and courteous service.

The President elect D.L. Taldeniya introduced the theme of the session. Guest of Honour Prof. Mohan Munasinghe also addressed the session.
