RASSL invites research papers

by Ananda Kannangara

The Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka (RASSL) on Thursday invited the academic community in the country and the members of the society to present high quality research papers on history, art, science, literature, language, religions and the social conditions of the present and former people in Sri Lanka.

The selected papers will be presented at the Royal Asiatic Society's first academic sessions, scheduled to be held on March 24, 2006.

Speaking at a media briefing held in Colombo, RASSL President Dr. K.D. Paranavitana said that the objective of conducting such a program was to encourage the academics and other interested parties in the country to carry out research on various fields that are very important for the present society.

The RASSL also announced that the titles of research papers are expected along with abstracts before August 26 and the abstracts should be limited to approximately 350 words.

They should be addressed to the Chairman of the Annual Academic Sessions, Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka, 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.

Speaking on the history of the RASSL, Emeritus Prof. Eugene Wikramanayake said that the Society, which has a history of 160 years was established in February 1845, based on similar lines that of the Royal Asiatic Society of Bengal and Great Britain and Ireland.

"During this period our society played a leading role in the establishment of several important national institutions in the country including the Museum, the Dept. of Archaeology, National Archives, Dept. of Meteorology, Dept. of Statistics and the University of Ceylon," she said. She said that the RASSL Library owned about 8,000 volumes of rare and valuable books and 117 titles of serials amounting to about 20,000 items.

RASSL, Chairman Prof. M. U. De Silva, Dr. Susantha Goonetilake, Dr. E. D. T. Kularatne were also present.
