Sri Lanka lose by 33 runs

by Ranjan Anandappa

The West Indies regained some vestige of pride when they beat Sri Lanka by 33 runs in their 5th Indian Oil Triangular limited overs cricket series at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Khettarama last night.

In pursuit of a victory target of 227, Sri Lanka were all out for 193 runs in 47 overs. The match was only of an academic interest for Sri Lanka and the win for the West Indies ended the barren run of their tour so far and will do wonders for their morale in their future endeavours.

Sri Lanka made three changes from their match winning team against India in Dambulla leaving out skipper Marvan Atapattu, Dilhara Lokuhettige and fast bowler Pradeep Jayaprakash and bringing in Sanath Jayasuriya who was rested suffering a shoulder injury, Nuwan Zoysa, and Muttiah Muralitharan into the side.

The West Indies brought in Darren Powell for Jermaine Lawson and Omari Banks for Ryan Ramdas.

Today's game between India and the West Indies will be of paramount interest for both teams as it could be classed as a semi-final. The winning team in today's match will meet Sri Lanka in the final on Tuesday at Khettarama under lights.

The West Indies team with limited resources under conditions which did not favour them gave a fine display of fighting cricket. Their fast bowlers Tino Best, Butler and Darren Powell had the pace to make even slow pitches seem fast and struck crucial blows to carve through the Sri Lankan batting.

With the exception of Russell Arnold who played an innings to savour last man out for 59 facing 88 deliveries with seven fours the rest of the batsmen gave a unimpressive batting display.

After left-handers Upul Tharanga and Sanath Jayasuriya put on 46 runs for the first wicket off 61 balls the Lankans lost wickets at rapid succession and fell apart in the face of a steady West Indian bowling attack which slow bowlers of the calibre of Omari Banks and Deonarine playing a vital role in their win taking 2 wickets apiece,

Shivenerine Chanderpaul and Sylvester Joseph played innings that combined responsibility and inspiration of the highest degree.

Chanderpaul ably supported by Joseph fully justified their electing to bat first after Chanderpaul won the toss.

The Windies skipper led from the front by opening the batting where the Lankan pacemen Nuwan Zoysa, Dilhara Fernando and Maharoof had no purchase from the pitch. Maharoof was the pick of the bowlers in his first spell conceding 18 runs off his first 7 overs. Maharoof when he completed his 9 overs he had given away 35 runs.

Chanderpaul and Xavier Marshall posted 25 runs for the first wicket in 8.1 overs before Marshall was run out off a direct hit by Upul Tharanga for 8 runs. Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardena deputising for regular skipper Marvan Atapattu switched his bowlers Zoysa, Dilhara Fernando and Muralitharan in a bit of breaking the second wicket alliance between Chanderpaul and Joseph which was reaching menacing proportions.

The 50 run stand between them for the second wicket came off 59 balls and once Chanderpaul was out caught by Maharoof off Upul Chandana in his first over the pair had added 72 runs for the second wicket off 49 balls in the 25th over, a reasonable platform built for the batsmen to follow. Chanderpaul had faced 79 deliveries and had eight boundaries in his innings. Joseph and Deonerine kept company for a while adding a further 55 runs for the third wicket when Deonerine became Chandana's second victim after scoring 21 runs facing 36 balls with a solitary boundary.

Omari Banks was promoted in the batting order ahead of seasoned Ricardo Powell and Ramdin in the quest of quick runs. Banks faced 44 deliveries for his 33 with a six and with Smith added 24 runs for the fifth wicket.
