by Leslie Fernando

The Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka (ARASL) wll hold the 22nd Rowing Nationals spread for six days for third successive year from August 22 to 27 on the Beira Waters at the Colombo Rowing Club.

This year's regatta is expected to have around 200 oarsmen and oarswomen participating with over 110 races to be worked off, said a senior official of ARASL. This regatta will also be a yardstick to identify talent in order to train rowers for the forthcoming South Asian Games (SAG) which will be held in Sri Lanka 2006, added the official.

Last year's regatta proved to be a tremendous success. It drew record number of entries. There will be events for boys and girls under-16, intermediate boys/girls and men and women.

There is no age category for both intermediate and seniors. To compete in the senior category, rowers must be a winner of the past intermediate event. The events are pairs, fours, sculls and double sculls.

The ARASL has also included a new trophy for girls schools sculler plus the men's doubles sculls for intermediate and senior category also new trophies.

"The ARASL will conduct the regatta on a grand scale in order to fulfill one of the objectives which is to popularise the sport in the country" the official added.

The rowers from Colombo Rowing Club, Royal, S. Thomas' College, St. Joseph's College, Old Joes SC, Ananda, Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Air Force, University of Colombo, University of Moratuwa, Ladies College and Musaeus College have already begun training on the Beira Waters and interesting rowing can be expected.

Last year, S. Thomas' College and Ladies College carried away the Gerry Silva Trophy for men's senior overall category and J. M. Perera Trophy for senior ladies category respectively.
