Parties regroup by Jayantha Sri Nissanka The fifth Presidential election will be held between November 15 and 22
in accordance with the Constitution and the Supreme Court ruling delivered
on Friday. Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake is expected to
gazette the election date next week. Nominations will be called in
mid-September.
President in Beijing by Janadasa Peiris and Rodney Martinesz from Beijing President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga will arrive in Beijing today
for a week long State visit during which several important agreements with
Chinese investors accruing far reaching benefits to Sri Lanka will be
signed. Focus on challenges ahead - President President's office has taken note of the Supreme Court determination that
the next election to the office of President of Sri Lanka should be held in
2005. The decision of the Supreme Court is final and binding. It is now the
responsibility of the government to make the necessary arrangements to give
effect to the decision of the Court, said a press release issued by the
Presidential Media Unit.
