Pakistani apples under FTA The first consignment of Pakistani apples under the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) has already reached the Colombo Port, a media release from the Pakistan High Commission said. Imported by a leading importer of fresh fruit M/s Sunchoice Trading Co. Pakistani apples would soon be available in Sri Lanka's wholesale and retail markets. Under the recently operationalised Free Trade Agreement, Sri Lanka has allowed duty free import of apples, and other fresh fruits form Pakistan. Provision of quality goods to consumers at affordable price is one of the underlying motivations for the Sri Lanka-Pakistan Free Trade Agreement. Pakistan is home of some of the world's most delicious varieties of apples which are world acclaimed for their natural attributes. These apples are grown without use of chemicals or genetic modification. Pakistan produces over half a million MT of apples every year and most of it is exported. In order to maintain the high quality and orchard freshness, these apples are preserved with the most modern fruit processing technology, and packed to the high international standards, before shipment in reefer containers to the importing countries. Sri Lanka, since 1992 has been one of the major markets of Pakistani apples, the release said. |
