At the kilogram shop : Weigh and eat! by Umangi de Mel Scrumptious to the core, with a totally different set of dishes from the Mediterranean, 'Sharrods' comes as a fresh breeze to Sri Lanka, a new concept in eating at the Kilogram Shop.
Here, you weigh the stuff that you eat, and pay exactly for that amount. That way, wastage is less and you buy only what you can eat. Run by two people, who are great food lovers, The Sharrods Kilogram shop is a fresh concept to Sri Lanka. Primula Ismail together with Ruwaiz Hassan started the outlet two months back. Sharrods apparently is attempting to bring authentic Continental/Mediterranean food to the public, via the new kilogram buying concept of affordable eating out. "I studied cookery in London at the Cordenbleu. In fact I've done anything and everything in cooking there, and learnt under people like Antonio Carlouccio, Michael Barry and Claudia Roden," says Primula with her extensive experience in cookery. For her, it's the greatest passion, and she enjoys trying out every possible dish. "I'm constantly cooking all types of things like Italian, French, pastries, confectionaries and even beverages. Actually, the kilogram shop was my brother's idea who lives in Brazil, where you get loads of kilogram shops. Plus, Mediterranean cooking is my favourite. But most of the dishes of its kind are seen only at five star hotels. So we thought it would be fun to bring it to the hi-street cookery" she says. The food is prepared by her using quality products and fresh herbs. "And those products are quite expensive, nevertheless we use them to maintain quality. According to them, kilogram food outlets are the most popular eating places in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil which caters to 90% of the working population in the city. The first 'kilograms' goes a long way back, at least 15 years. Ruwaiz says that the outlet could be the only one of its kind in Asia. |
