TRI modernises quality tea production

Modern scientific methods introduced by the Tea Research Institute are always giving priority for the manufacture of hygienic quality tea maintaining the reputation of Sri Lanka tea, said Dr. Ziard Mohammod, Director of Tea Research Institute.

He said that the low country tea has shown a success due to the suppley of quality leaf by tea smallholders who maintained tea lands themselves on a satisfactory level under the advisory services launched by the regional authorities attached to the plantation industry.

He was speaking at the annual seminar of factory superintendents and assistant superintendents in Deniyaya and Galle Plantation Zones organized by the Regional Scientific Committee, Galle/Deniyaya held at Management Development and Training Institute, Wakwella recently.

P. Wickramasekara, Chairman of the RSC presided. Speaking further Dr. Ziard Mohammod said due to the fast spreading of "Shot Hole Borer".

Speaking further Dr. Ziard Mohammod said due to the fast spreading of "Shot Hole Borer" tea pest in Deniyaya plantation area greenleaf yield had gone down from 250 to 500 kilograms per hectare at several tea estates a few months ago. As a result of advisory services launched in this area to educate smallholders this pest has been controlled.

Dr. M. A. Wijeratne of TRI explained that the soil management of tea lands was very essential for the increasing of productivity protecting the environment.

TRI Research Officer Dr. Balasooriya said that every tea smallholder should improve his knowledge on latest planting methods for the maintenance of tea lands at satisfactory level.

Jerry Galahitiyawa, Technical Officer, TRI introduced modern high tech machinery for the manufacturing of quality tea.

Duncan Jayasinghe, Deputy General Manager of Tea Smallholder Factories Limited said that our tea industry was depending on quality leaf and expert tea producers.
