Wayamba University to assess household food security status The Council for Agricultural Research Policy (CARP) in Sri Lanka, under its "competitive research grant program" has decided to fund the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka to assess the current status of food security of rural subsistence farmers. While Dr. Udith K. Jayasinghe - Mudalige of the Dept. of Agribusiness Management in the Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management in this university acts as the principal scientist of the research project of Dr. Renuka R. Silva and Mrs. Anoma Chandrasekara of the Department of Applied Nutrition in the Faculty of Livestock, Fisheries and Nutrition will be the collaborating scientists. The aims of the study are to review the measures used in previous studies (conducted in both developed and developing country perspective) to evaluate household food security in terms of their strengths and weaknesses and to construct and validate an appropriate index - "Household Food Security Index" (HFSI) that takes into account of different facets of the concept of food security. The outcome of the entire project is expected to help work out appropriate policies related to agriculture, in general and food and nutrition, in particular, in Sri Lanka. |
