Permanent positions for graduates in private sector

by Indeewara Thilakarathne

The graduates, who were placed in the private sector establishments will be given permanent positions on the completion of their training, said Skills Development, Vocational and Technical Education Minister Piyasena Gamage when the MoU was signed between Tharuna Aruna Institute and the Institute of Personal Management of Sri Lanka at Hotel Renuka recently.

He said that the demand for the courses conducted by Tharuna Aruna fell sharply after the Government absorbed 42,000 graduates into the permanent cadre in different Ministries. However, he said that no Government could create employment opportunities for each and every graduate and therefore, public-private partnership was vital to bridge the gap between education and market demands.

Chief Executive Officer of the Tharuna Aruna Institute said that Tharuna Aruna II program was implemented to improve the "overall quality" of the graduates to fit them to serve in the private sector.

He added that the Government had already embarked on a project titled "Improving Relevance and Quality of Undergraduate Education" (IRQUE) to address the issues of mismatch and this would increase the employability of the graduates. The second stage of the Tharuna Aruna cater to graduates who pass out during the implementation phase of the IRQUE Project.

The objective of the programm is to provide placement to 10,000 graduates in the Private Sector. Since the launch of the program, 1,210 graduates have been provided placement in the private sector.

However, out of 655 placed in the private sector in 2003/4 only 129 graduates remained in the private sector. However, he was optimistic that the acceptability for graduates in the private sector has increased. He said that in August, 120 graduates were placed in the private sector establishments surpassing the 110 placements in July.

He said that series of presentations titled "Personal Development and Retention Strategies in Human Resources Management" was organised to have a dialogue between the Government and Private Sector.

Chairman of Tharuna Aruna Institute, Nawaz Rajabdeen, W. Ellawala, Additional Secretary (Development), Ranjith Hettiarachchi and other officials were also present.
