Upgrade railway stations An archaic manual ticketing system dating back to the colonial era coupled with a shortage in the workforce has prevented the officials from providing an efficient service, said Fort Railway Station Superintendent N. Wijesinghe. "Government could install at least a ticketing machine to issue platform tickets to reduce the passenger congestion. In other developed countries, passengers could get tickets by inserting a coin but here they have to wait for hours. Digitalising the ticketing system is a challenge" he said. He said that though the Fort Railway Station was one of the main railway stations of the country, it did not have a digital timetable. A worker had to climb to change the timetable from time to time. He said the Station needs about 300 minor employees. He further said that passenger facilities including waiting areas were not adequate. Rain but no floods Scattered showers are expected to continue in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts of the Southern province for next few days as the South-West monsoon enters its tail-end stage, Meteorology Department said on Friday. "On and off showers with bright sun is the usual weather pattern in Sri Lanka during this time of the year", said an official from the Meteorology Department ruling out possibility of floods at the present moment. Asked if the hurricane developed in the Atlantic ocean and the recent condition gave rise to floods in neighbouring India would have an impact on the climate of Sri Lanka he said, it is difficult to say if the hurricane could change the vital climatic factors such as air pressure, humidity to an extent to cause change in the weather but there is always a possibility of having some kind of impact.
