Agreements between SLFP-JVP, JHU stand positive by Anura Maitipe The forging of a common agreement between the SLFP- JVP and the JHU to support the SLFP presidential candidate Mahinda Rajapakse is a positive gesture towards the victory of Mahinda Rajapakse in the forthcoming Presidential election, Mahaweli,River Basin Development Minister and the General Secretary of the SLFP Maithripala Sirisena told the Sunday Observer. He added "when we go through the results of previous elections held within the last ten years it had been proved that common fronts led by the SLFP had gained more votes than the UNP. For instance, in 1994 presidential election President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga had received 4,709,205 votes while the UNP candidate Srima Dissanayaka had received 2,715,285 and President Kumaratunga won with a majority vote of 1,993,920 in 1994. Again in the presidential election held in December 1999 President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga had received 4,312,157 votes and the UNP candidate Ranil Wickremasinghe had received 3,602,748 votes. President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga won this election with the majority of 709,409 votes. In the General Election held in April 2004 the UPFA received 4,223,970 and the UNP only 3,504,200. the UPFA won this election with a majority of 719,770 votes.This is the general voting practice of the country. There are 292,934 newly registered votes and majority of these newly registered votes are left oriented. |
