First-leg of Bradby Shield:

Trinity trounce Royal 36-6

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen Kandy Sports Corr.

Trinity College scored their biggest ever win when they trounced Royal College by 36 points (3 goals, 3 tries), to 6 (2 drop goals) in the first leg of the Singer-sponsored Bradby Shield encounter played before a large crowd at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy yesterday. At half time, Trinity led 21-3.

Before the commencement of the match both teams were introduced to the chief guest former Trinity College Sportsman and Vice Principal Hilary Abeyratne who was a legend by himself. Rains before the match made grand conditions wet and muddy not conductive to forth open rugby but the Lions excelled under these conditions to rout the Royalists who had eight consecutive wins before the commencement of this match.

It was the Royalist who opened scoring through a fine drop goal by skipper and fly half Varna Wijewardena and there was much jubilations in the Colombo school camp.

But Trinity tought back by driving play deep into their opponents territory and it took 17 minutes to open their account when fly half Suranga Pushpakumara made the break and shipped a pass to scrum half Nishantha Mamikkam who in turn lobbed the ball to shipper and centre Nishan Fernando who touched down near the posts. Suranga Pushpakumara added the extra points and there onwards Trinity never looked back with their initial lead of 7-3.

In the 26th minute No. 8 Imalka Madummapatabendi scored under the posts off a ruck and Pushpakumara added the extra point for Trinity to lead 14-3.

Just before the short blast Trinity's quarters moved the ball after winning of a line out deep inside Royal territory and winger Niroshan Sanjeewa scored near the post. Pushpakumara added the extra points. Trinity led 21-3 at the breather.

Trinity continued their dominance in the second half dispite a little fight back by the Royalists which did not bear any fruits.

In the 16th minute centre Ranganath Ranatunga scored by the right corner flag, off a three quarter movement which went unconverted. Trinity 26-3.

Two minutes later Royal reduced the lead througths another drop goal excuted by skipper Varuna Wijewardena. Royal 6-26.

But Trinity continued to harass the Royalists and scorse their fifth try when flanker Milinda Aluvihare broke off the pack and scored far right. This try too went unconverted. Trinity 31-6 In the dying stages of the game No.8 Imalka Madduraptabendi scored off a far left to give Trinity a 36-6 win.

Orville Fernando refereed.

Royal won the under 18 match the Sumithiriarachchi trophy 6-0 off two penalties which were put over of Omar Hassaz.

They also won the Under-12 match 21 - 14 and also the Under 14 game 19-0. The under 16 match ended in a 5-all draw.
