Sri Lanka end up in Plate: Beat Guam, but lose to Taipei

Sri Lanka scored a fine 39 points (2 goals, 5 tries) to 7 (1 goal) win over Guam in their opening match of the Singer SriLankan Airlines Rugby Sevens which began at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium in Kandy yesterday. At half time Sri Lanka led 19-7.

It was Kandy Sports Club's three quarters who contributed a major share of the scoring with winger Sanjeewa Jayasinghe leading the way with 3 tries while Pradeep Liyanage (2) winger Chamara Withanage (1) and prop Mohammed Saldeen (1) scoring the other tries. Scrum half Amjad Buksh goalled two of the tries. For Guam Tyran Jones scored the try which was goalled by Paul Claros.

But Sri Lanka lost to Chinese Taipei 0-26 to end up in the Plate Championship. Defending champions Japan were in roaring form beating Singapore 57-0 and Thailand 26-12 to enter the cup championship along with Korea, China and Chinese Taipei. In the Plate championship there will be Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Kazakhastan and Thailand.

Bowl championship will see Guam, Arabian Gulf, Malaysia and Singapore in the fray.

The results of matches played yesterday: Hong Kong beat Malaysia 105, Korea beat Kazakhastan 24-5, Chinese Taipei beat Guam 59-0, China beat Malaysia 26-5, Japan beat Singapore 57-0, Kazakhastan beat Arabian Gulf 7-5, Sri Lanka beat Guam 39-7, Thailand beat Singapore 22-7, China beat Hong Kong 40-0, Korea beat Arabian Gulf 21-12, Chinese Taipei beat Sri Lanka 26-0, Japan beat Thailand 26-12.
