Junior Squash Nationals

Nirasha reigns supreme

by Srian Obeyesekere

The under-19 girls final between blood relations Nirasha Guruge versus Tehani Guruge took centre stage as reigning champion Nirasha overcame some stiff resistance from her cousin sister to finally prevail in straight sets 9-6, 9-7, 9-2 and with it walk away with quite a cake - Rs. 5,000/= cash prize, a Dunlop Wilson squash bag and the trophy to boot at the Junior Squash Nationals worked out at the Tamil Union Squash Courts yesterday.

If it was a continuance of her dominance at that level for Nirasha, for Eranga Alwis, 9-6, 9-6, 9-1 three set winner over C. Rajapaksha in the boy's under-19 final, the reward of course was a bit more to smile about - a return air ticket to Bangkok courtesy Del Air Travels, Rs. 5000/= and trophy. If the championship was intense among the competitors from u-9 upwards, Chief Guest David Ponniah, the Warden of S. Thomas,' Mt.Lavinia extolled what a sport squash which to take to meant much sacrifices by students which therefore made it as important a sport as cricket. A sport which the S. Thomas' Warden said, He had had a slight taste of although it was in cricket he excelled in. The latter sport which the President of the Squash Federation of Sri Lanka Rohan Anthonisz, himself a former Thomian reminded the Chief Guest where both of them had glowed as opening batsmen".
