Sri Lankans put up brave show, though losing

by Lal Gunasekera

Wooden spoonists Sri Lanka fought bravely against superior opponents and went down to South Korea and Singapore in the Regu event, while losing to both South Korea and Malaysia in the Doubles event at the International Sepaktakraw Championship held in Hoengsoeng County in the Province of Gan-won-de, South Korea recently.

Twelve countries participated in both the men's and women's Regu and Doubles events and they were: South Korea, Thailand, China, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Pakistan, Vietnam and Sri Lanka. Malaysia won the gold medal in the Regu events for men with Thailand and Myanmar securing the silver and bronze, while Vietnam won the gold for the Regu event for women, while Thailand and South Korea bagged the silver and bronze medals respectively.

Thailand won the gold medal in the Doubles event for men, while Myanmar and Malaysia won the silver and bronze.

Thais won the gold in the women's Doubles event too with Vietnam and South Korea, securing the silver and bronze medals respectively.

The President of the Sri Lanka Amateur Sepaktakraw Association (SLASA), Nizam Hajireen, said that the Sri Lankans gained the much needed experience and exposure before the 20th King's Cup Championship in Thailand at the end of the year. He further said that he was proud of the team members who did not go "missing" in South Korea, unlike many other competitors from well known sports bodies, and since the sport was introduced to Sri Lanka in 1990, Sepaktakraw teams have been on tour to numerous Asian countries and even to Europe, but its members have always returned to their motherland and not brought disgrace to the country.
