All-Island School Games: Western and Central Province competitors excel

Western Province and Central Province competitors showed better performances to share major honours amongst the 11 disciplines worked off in the first stage of the All-Island School Games 2005 conducted by the Ministry of Education and held on September 3, 4, and 5 in different venues in Colombo and outstations.

The events completed and the champions, runners-up and third placed were found in netball, basketball, elle, chess, boxing, physical training championships, soccer, tennis, swimming, judo and bodybuilding contest. Kalutara Balika Vidyalaya (Western Province) netballers put up a fine performances to retain both the under-17 and under-19 titles. S. H. N. de Silva of Bandaranaike M.V. Gampaha proved his class to become Best Bodybuilder at the Schoolboy Bodybuilding contest. B. A. C. Perera of St. Joseph's College, Anuradhapura finish runner-up and K. H. C. N. de Silva of Trinity College in third place. The second stage of the games began yesterday with 11 more disciplines on the cards: volleyball, hockey, softball, cricket, karate, table tennis, badminton, wrestling, gymnastics, kabaddi, cycling and carrom and will be continued today (Sunday) and tomorrow. 17 different venues in Colombo and outskirts.

Athletics, the main discipline of the games will be held at the third and final stage and will be at the Sugathadasa Stadium on September 29 and 30 and October 1 and 2.

The Ministry of Education has made all arrangements to hold the distribution of awards to winners in all 23 discipline at the conclusion of the athletic championships on October 2 at the Sugathadasa Stadium. The All-Island School Games first stage results.......

Under-17-Kalutara BV (champions), Sirimavo Bandaranaike BV (runners-up) Girls High School (third).

Under-19 Kalutara BV (champions), Maliyadeva BV, runners-up Union College, Thelippalai.

Swimming

Boys: Trinity College (champions), St. Joseph's College (runners-up), Ananda College (third).

Girls: Ladies College (champions), Mahamaya College, Kandy (runners-up), Musaeus College and Asian International (joint third).

Basketball

Boys: St. Anthony's College, Wattala (champions), St. Anne's College, Kurunegala (runners-up), D. S. Senanayake College (third).

Girls - Good Shephered Convent, Kotahena (Champions), Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya (runners-up), Girls High School, Kandy (third).

Football

Under-17:St. Benedict's College (champions), Zahira College, Colombo (runners-up), Zahira College, Gampola (third).

Under-19:Mahinda College, Galle (champions), Dharmaraja College (runners-up), Wickremabahu National School, Gampola (third).

Boxing

Vidyarathana University, Horana (champions), Seevali MV (runners-up), Kingswood College (third).

Tennis

Boys:Royal College (champions), Ananda College (runners-up), S. Thomas' College (third).

Girls:Visakha Vidyalaya (champions), Bishop's College (runners-up), Musaeus College (third).

Boys:Under-15:Richmond College (champions), Kingswood College (runners-up), Royal College (third). Under-19:Dharmaraja College (champions), Dharmasoka College (runners-up), Kegalu Vidyalaya (third).
