Sixty outboard motor boats for Ampara fishermen

Sixty fishermen in the villages of Pedal and Panama in the Ampara district who were hit by the tsunami, each received a nineteen-and-a-half-foot outboard motor boat and fishing gear valued at $5, million each last week.

The boats were distributed by Minister of Fisheries, Milroy Fernando, restarting the livelihoods of these fishermen. The funds were provided by the Colombo Rotary Club, director general of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, G Piyasena said.

Each boat cost $2 million and was built at the Ana Maria boatyard, Negombo. The engines of Japanese Suzuki and Yamaha makes which were fitted in, cost $2 million each. Nets and other fishing gear valued at $1 million were also given to each fisherman.(EL)
