CFINS rebuilds houses In the aftermath of the tsunami of December 2004 which was the worst natural disaster in Sri Lanka its many foreign friends and expatriate Sri Lankans contacted President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and offered help to provide relief through the Colombo Friend-in-Need Society (CFINS) to those severely affected and rendered homeless. In response to the many requests it was decided to launch the Tsunami Housing Project to rebuild houses in some of the areas affected, and thereby contribute in some measure to the national task of rehabilitating and re-building the lives of those severely affected and displaced. Under Phase I of the Project 28 houses which were completely damaged, in the hamlets of Venamulla, Kuleegoda and Dimbulduwa close to Ambalangoda have been rebuilt at a cost of Rs. 7,813,863. These houses which were handed over recently have been rebuilt according to the same plan as the damaged houses and were among the first permanent houses to be completed in the area, being ready for occupation by mid May. The Colombo Friend-in-Need Society (CFINS) established originally in 1831, is the oldest Non-Governmental Social Service Organisation in Sri Lanka. In recent times its core activity has been the provision of artificial limbs to persons who have lost their limbs due to various causes. The CFINS is the largest single provider of prosthetic and orthotic devices and appliances under what has come to be known popularly as the Jaipur Foot Program.
