LTTE not moving away from terrorism

Jayatilleke de Silva reporting from New York

The process of engagement and accommodation afforded to the LTTE as part of the peace process does not seem to have presuaded them to move away from terrorism as is evidenced by their recent killing of the Foreign Minister, their continued recruitment of child soldiers and their killings of political rivals, said President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga addressing the High-Level Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York.

Though such actions test the commitment of a vast majority of our people to pursuing a negotiated settlement we have rejected the option of a military response. Instead we reiterate our commitment to a ceasefire and a political solution whilst reviewing the previous approach towards negotiating with the LTTE, she added.

She called upon the United Nations and the international community to help in developing mechanisms that support States engaged in such peace processes and sanction terrorist groups that undermine them.

It is therefore timely this Assembly addresses the question of practical means of denying external access and support to such entities to sustain their military and fund raising activities that are detrimental to the ongoing peace process, she said.
