ILO Chief tells President :

Samurdhi scheme could be a model

Mr. Juan Somavia, Director-General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) called on President Chandrika Kumaratunga at New York hotel and invited Sri Lanka to play a greater role following its election to the governing body of the ILO.

The President briefed the ILO Director General of Sri Lanka's Samurdhi Scheme as a youth employment programme and one which envisages to generate a 100,000 self-employment opportunities. Mr. Juan Somavia said that such a programme could be a model that merits emulation around the developing world.

The creation of an employment organisation in Sri Lanka for best practices in employer-employee relations was also discussed Associated with President Kumaratunga at the discussions were Foreign Secretary H. M. G. S. Palihakkara and Sri Lanka's Permanent Representative to the UN Prasad Kariyawasam.
