Talking Point : Dark era for journalists if ...

Does it portend another dreadful era similar to the late 80s for journalists if a UNP President is elected, was the question raised in media circles after a journalist attached to a Tamil medium television channel fled the country in fear of retaliation last week.

On a complaint made by the UNP, NIB detectives have inspected the residence of Ranga, moderator of the program 'Minnal'. Having recollected the destiny that befell journalist Richard de Soyza, the moderator has gone into hiding.

Allegations have been made against the moderator that he had invited UNP MP Maheswaran and former CWC MP Yogarajan to his program and intentionally dragged them into a heated argument on the Presidential election when angry Maheswaran let the cat out of the bag.

Maheswaran accused the CWC of accepting millions of rupees from the UNP to support Ranil in the coming Presidential election thereby selling the upcountry Tamil votes. He went on to challenge Yogarajan to prove the allegation. Maheswaran's behaviour had perturbed Ranil as one of his dirty games to win the election was exposed.

Later, Ranil had reprimanded Maheswaran over the matter and the UNP Central Committee sat at an urgent meeting which discussed the issue at length to find possible means to prevent such media exposure of party secrets. Digging up stories is the duty of talented journalists who have a nose for news and politicians who do not do their home work before going public dig their own graves.

As the Opposition Leader, if Ranil sends detectives to search journalists what would be the destiny of journalists if he is elected to the office of Executive President?
