Mahinda or Ranil : SLMC to decide today by Anura Maitipe The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has decided to support a Presidential candidate who accepts the right to self determination of the Muslim Community in the North and East. They have arrived at this decision during the discussions held at SLMC headquarters in Colombo, a spokesman for the SLMC told the Sunday Observer. This proposal has been unanimously endorsed by organisers of electoral districts in the North and East. They stated that in the event of finding a negotiated solution to the North-East conflict that the right of Muslims should not be abdicated to the LTTE. And the Muslim community should also be granted same status equal to the Tamils in the North East, he added. He pointed out, that when the peace negotiations resume the Muslim community should be recognised as a separate group in the negotiation panel. And Muslim representatives should be given an equal opportunity in the participation of peace talks. The SLMC has plans to hold the final round of discussions today in Kandy. Following this round of talks they expect to announce the name of the Presidential Candidate whom they would support in the forthcoming Presidential election, he noted. |
