Antonians stave off late challenge

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy sports corr

St. Anthony's won the Rev. Fr. Angelo Rosati Trophy for the first time when they staved off a late challenge to defeat S. Thomas' by 30 points (2 goals, 2 tries, 2 penalties) to 21 (3 tries, 2 penalties) in their second encounter rugby match played at Nittawela yesterday.

At half-time, the Antonians led 15-10.

This was Antonian's tenth successive win for the season, which included four trophies: Dilip Kumar Trophy, Singer Shield Schools Division One 'B' Group Championship title, Singer SriLankan Airlines Sevens 2005 Schools Tournament Trophy and the Rev. Fr. Angelo Rosati Trophy which in its inaugural year was won by the Thomians.

Winger Kusal Rankothge put the Antonian into an early lead with a blazing try early in the game but the Thomians reduced the lead through a try by centre Viran Udugama.

The Antonians increased their lead in the 15th minute through a penalty fired by skipper and stand-off Saheer Reyal.

The Antonians went further ahead with a try by centre Chanaka Gunaratne which was goalled by Saheer Reyal. Just before the lemons Thomians reduced the lead through a try by winger Nilakshan Muthetugama but failed to add the extra points and the scores stood at 15-10 in favour of the Antonians at the breather.

But the Thomians fought back in the second half through their forwards led by their No. 8 Namal Rajapakse. A penalty awarded in front fired by Nilakshan Muthetugama saw them reduce the lead to 13-15.

In the 10th minute a penalty awarded to the Antonians was kicked to touch by stand off Saheer Reyal. From the ensuing line out, the Antonians won the ball and drove through their forwards with No. 8 Vasabha Senarath falling over near the left corner flag. Saheer Reyal made a brilliant conversion for the Antonians to lead 22-13.

Another penalty fired by winger Nilakshan Muthetugama saw the Thoras reduce the lead to 16-22. Late in the game Thomians closed the gap to a single point when their three quarters moved the ball beautifully and full back B. Thaneeshan formed the overlap to touch down mid left. But Muthetugama's kick at goal was off target Thomians 21-22.

In the 25th minute the Antonians scored off a three quarter movement through winger Kusal Rankothge by the left corner flag which went unconverted. Antonians led 27-21. This was winger Kusal Rankothge's 20 try for the season.

In the final minute of play, Saheer Reyal fired another penalty for the Antonians to win 30-21. Dilroy Fernando refereed.

S. Thomas College won the under-17 game 26-8.

The Antonians won the under-13 B game 14-0 and also under 13 A game 14-7.
