Anura Rohana for Crowne Plaza tourney in China

by Lal Gunesekera

Sri Lanka's professional golfer Anura Rohana is scheduled to leave the country on Sunday (September 25) to play in the Crowne Plaza Open Championship to be worked off in Beijing, China from September 29 to October 2. This event is on the Asian Professional Golfers Association (APGA) Tour.

Five more APGA Tour tournaments are lined up for Anura Rohana upto end November. They are the Bangkok Airways Open in Thailand from October 13 to 16, Sanya Open again in China from October 20 to 23, Indian Open in Delhi from October 27 to 30, Carlsberg Masters in Vietnam from November 3 to 6 and the Double 'A ' Thailand Masters in Bangkok from November 17 to 20. Earlier this month, Anura Rohana, played at the Volkswagen Masters in Beijing, China.

He had to honour of playing alongside professionals in the calibre of Goosen and New Zealand's Michael Campbell, who is the current US Open champion. Anura Rohana fared well to be joint 24th with rounds of 70, 68, 71, 75. He had a poor fourth-round, otherwise he could have been around the 15th. He next played at the Singapor Open, but failed to make the "cut" due to narrow fairways that put him into trouble, but is very confident of faring well in the next tournaments.

Sri Lanka's other professional golfer, Lalith Kumara, did not do well at all on the Indian PGA Tour. He seems to have developed a fault in his swing and does not look confident.

He failed to make the "cut" at both the Hyundai TNGF Open in Chennai as well as at the Hero Honda Open South in Bangalaore, and may not play at The Hindu Open in Chennai scheduled for September 21 to 24. He may return to Colombo to correct his swing and for further training.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU), are preparing to send four amateurs for the Pakistan Open Amateur Championship to be worked off in Lahore in November, while the Bangladesh Open Championship is to be staged in Dhaka in November with the All-India Open Amateur Championship scheduled for February next year (2006).

The Milo Sri Lanka Junior Open Championship has been slotted for December.
