Lloyd happy about progress of Sri Lanka cricketers

by A. C. de Silva

Former West Indies cricket captain Clive Lloyd paid rich compliments when he addressed the gathering as chief guest at the University of Moratuwa Colours Nite.

Lloyd who led West Indies to victory at three World Cup Cricket Tournaments, said that Sri Lanka has developed its cricket on scientific lines and he was happy about the way that the Sri Lanka team has been played in the international arena.

From one great to another ... Former West Indies cricket captain Clive Lioyd (right) hands over the trophy for the Best All-round Sportsman at the University of Moratuwa to P. N. S. Gunaratne at the Colours Awards Ceremony held recently.

The West Indian 'giant' said that cricket and academic studies should go hand in hand just like the way the late West Indian captain Sir Frank Worrell did during his playing days. Worrell had an unblemished career as a cricketer, both as a player and later on as captain if the West Indies and Clive Lloyd signalled him out as a fine example for all students.

Lloyd also paid a rich tribute to the authorities of Moratuwa University for the methodical manner they were carrying on their academic activities and sports activities as well and wished all success to the authorities in their future endeavours.

While Clive Lloyd was the chief guest, Professor Dayantha Wijeysekera was the guest of honour. Sportsmen and sportswomen who performed well received colours in the various sports.

It was pointed out that the University of Moratuwa fared prominently in the inter-university sports competitions and emerged champions in six sports, namely: basketball, elle, swimming, chess, hockey, tennis and were runners-up in six more - wrestling, tennis (women), rugby football, rowing (men and women) and chess (women).

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dayantha S. Wijeyesekera in his address stated that the students at Moratuwa University excelled both in their academic activities and sports too.

The Best Allround Sportsman of the Year Trophy went to P. N. S. Gunaratne and the Best Allround Student (sports and academic activities) donated by Prof. Dayantha S. Wijeyesekera was awarded to K. G. J. S. Kumara.
