Western
Province well set to retain overall trophy
by Leslie Fernando Western Province players performed best amongst the 11 disciplines worked off in the second stage of the All-Island School Games 2005 conducted by the Ministry of Education on September 10, 11 and 12 at different venues in Colombo and outstation. Western Province were champions in 6 disciplines in the second stage: Wrestling, Gymnastics, Carrom, Kabaddi, Table Tennis and Volleyball meanwhile North Central Province were champions in Cycling, Karate. Central Province won the Hockey. Southern Province took the Badminton and Wayamba won the Softball cricket. In the first stage of the games held from September 2 to 5 Western Province became champions in 6 disciplines, Central Province in 4 disciplines and Southern Province in 1 discipline. Western Province who fared prominently in the first two stages of the games seemed set to retain the overall championship title on conclusion of the final stage event - Athletics the main discipline to be staged at the Sugathadasa Stadium on September 29, and 30 and October 1 and 2. K. A. D. Sashi Udayanga and A. Ishara Dilhani Jayaratne of Nivanthkachethiya Maha Vidyalaya, Anuradhapura proved their class to ride with authority to win both boys and girls Cycling Championships held around the Vihara Maha Devi Park. Udayanga came first in the 29 laps race while Dilhani came first in the 12 laps race. At the last All-Island School Games cycling event, riders from the same Maha Vidyalaya, Anuradhapura emerged champions. |
