Sierra cables to go public soon

Sierra, the company which in 1981 ventured into the telecommunications infrastructure has today diversified into a Sri Lankan conglomerate and is expected to go public shortly. The company's turnover in 2004 was Rs. 6 million, achieved with 3000 employees, a press release said.

Sierra Holdings' success has been on many fronts, including engineering and construction, cable manufacturing, consumer electronics, tourism, fertiliser, IT and property development. The company also has its presence in India and the Maldives where it is engaged in infrastructure development.

Sierra's success was achieved in spite of competition from multinationals operating in the same field. For instance, telecommunication infrastructure development had been the domain of international companies. Today, Sierra is the largest telecommunication engineering construction company and extends its services to giants such as Sri Lanka Telecom and other mobile operators in providing vital infrastructure development assistance.

Sierra Construction Ltd, the flagbearer of the group is a leader in the general engineering and construction field, specialising in telecom infrastructure, large engineering and construction projects, in water supply and drainage, building construction, pilling, electrical engineering, road development and rehabilitation.

Sierra Constructions' demand for quality cables resulted in the formation of Sierra Cables and has demand from within and outside the company. Sierra Cables is the owning company of Alucop Cables, one of the leading cable manufacturers here. Sierra Cables exports to India, Pakistan and the Maldives.

The company also owns 37 percent of the PVC pipes and fittings manufacturer, Central Industries Ltd.

With both companies directly linked to the construction industry, Sierra Cables is in a position for added growth, the release said.

Sierra's entry into the tourism industry gave a boost to up-market tourism in the country. When Sierra backed the maverick industry professional Prasanna Jayawardena into setting up the Elephant Corridor with Rs. 350 million, the standard set was the highest. Sierra Holdings is also the major shareholder of Sanasuma Boutique Hotels.
