Sarasaviya Film Festival :

'Divine honours for the propagation of cinema'

The 30th Sarasaviya Film Festival will be held at the BMICH on October 27 at 6.30 p.m. Sarasaviya Film Festival is one of the leading cinema festivals in the country sponsored this year by the Hatton National Bank (HNB) and the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation (SLIC).

The sponsorship cheques for the forthcoming event was presented last Wednesday at the Taj Samudra Hotel to ANCL Chairman Janadasa Peiris, HNB General Manager Rajendra Thyagaraja and SLIC Director Damien Fernando. This year's Sarasaviya Film Festival has been specially titled "Divine honours for the propagation of cinema" by the organisers. Another special feature of this year's festival is that the cash prizes presented to the winners have been doubled from this year.

According to the organisers, famous Indian artist Jamuna Rani will be a special guest at this year's festival. Speaking at the press briefing Chairman Janadasa Peiris said, "Lake House as the country's leading print media institution has undertaken to hold several social and other religious events in the country."

He said, "the Sarasaviya Film Festival is one of the major happenings in our calendar. This event is not limited to the Lake House Group. We consider it as a national arts event".

Twenty two films screened last year will compete for this year's festival under several main categories such as Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor/Actress, Best Supporting Actor/Actress, Best Producer etc.

Information Ministry Secretary W. P. Ganegala said the Ministry of Information would hope to give big support to make this event a success.

"We have also decided to hold the Sarasaviya Film Week in Kandy and Matara areas as well from this year," he further said.

Rajendra Thyagaraja said "This is the first time we came forward to support the film industry in Sri Lanka. HNB is extremely pleased to share the joy of presenting this year's Sarasaviya Film Festival."

SLIC Director Damien Fernando said, the first Sarasaviya Film Festival was held in 1964. As a leading company in the business for 43 years now, we the SLIC has understood the vital relationship in business with the community. Therefore we are proud to hold hands with ANCL to present this year's Sarasaviya Film Festival successfully".

The press briefing was compered by veteran lyricist Bandula Nanayakkarawasam, who will be handling the script of the stage direction of the main Sarasaviya Film Festival along with TVT of Ravindra Guruge.
