Money from China for multiple projects

Power and Energy Minister Susil Premajayantha on Wednesday highly valued the soft term loan of US dollars 385 million, granted by the People's Republic of China towards the construction of the Norochcholai coal power plant.

He said that the longstanding friendship between Sri Lanka and the People's Republic of China during the past decades had enormously helped our country to carry out numerous economic development projects.

The Minister made these observations at a ceremony held in Colombo to coincide with the 56th National Day of People's Republic of China. Ambassador of People's Republic of China, Sun Guoxiang was the guest of honour at the ceremony, organised by the Association for Sri Lanka China Social and Cultural Cooperation (ASLCSCC).

Minister Premajayantha also said that the future construction work of the Colombo -Katunayaka new railway line, exploration of oil deposits in Hambantota and the construction activities of houses in tsunami affected areas are some of the development projects scheduled to be carried out by the Lankan Government with the assistance of the Peoples Republic of China.

"The Chinese Government not only promotes our economy but also our culture. They gifted the Bandarnaike International Conference Hall and also the Superior Courts Complex," he said.

He further said that the diplomatic ties commenced between our countries during the regime of former Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandarnaike immensely helped to cherish the long standing friendship and also to expand trade activities.

Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana, Minister D.E.W. Gunasekara and Vice President, China Radio International Kong Lingbao were presented with mementos for the invaluable service rendered towards the development of friendship between the two countries, while a group of school children and elders who became winners of essay and art competitions, organised by the ASLCSCC to coincide with the Chinese National Day were also awarded with certificates and prizes.
