Helping Lankan youth by Ananda Kannangara The month long seventh International Marist Brothers General Conference was concluded on Friday in Negombo. The sole objective of conducting the conference was to strengthen the unity of all Marist brothers serving the general public and also to find ways and means to help the youth population in their educational activities. Around 60 Marist delegates from 76 countries attended the Conference held at the Hotel Goldi Sands, Negombo from September 05- 30. Superior General Rev. Bro. Sean Sammon headed the delegation. Speaking at a press briefing Bro. Sammon said that out of 51,500 brothers and laypeople who are the members of their organisation at present, only seven per cent is representing Asian countries. "This resulted us to focus on Sri Lanka as this years venue with the objective of educating people about the future activities of their institute. Marist Brother Vicar General Luis Gracia Sobrado said that their conference also focused the attention towards the strengthening the unity of the institute and study questions related to general concern. "Five of our earlier general conferences were held in Rome while one conference was held in Brazil, he said. Provincial Superior of Sri Lanka Brother Michael De Waas, who represented Marist brothers in Sri Lanka and Pakistan said that while strengthening the unity of the institute they also discussed about what contribution the International Marist Brothers can offer to uplift the education in the Asian region. The proceedings of the conference were conducted in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. |
