Support to strengthen Vavuniya

A consignment of motor bicycles, milk cans and a trailer were handed over to the Livestock Breeders Co-Operative Society (LIBCOS), Vavuniya recently by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) under a transition program.

A UNDP spokesman said that it was with the intention of strengthening the local community, facilitating sustainable economic recovery and development within the district. The UNDP's initiative under its 'Livelihood support through livestock development is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) with the aim of supporting the peace process while attending to the humanitarian needs of the people in the conflict affected areas.

According to a Vavuniya LIBCOS spokesman the equipment and vehicles which they received would set up a strong network among communities improving the milk production. 'Ultimately it would upgrade the lifestyle of Vavuniya livestock farmers,' he said.

UNDP sources claimed that they had targeted the North-East with 48 transition programs on agriculture, livestock, fisheries, infrastructure and capacity building. They also stressed that all their development assistance programs had been drawn promoting the traditional economic sectors of rural Sri Lanka. (DPL)
