Up-country Tamils await Premier to pledge support

Anura Maitipe reporting from Kotmale

Tamil leaders in the Nuwara Eliya district are dismayed over the indecision of the estate political leadership as to whom to support at the Presidential Elections.

They said that what wanted was a proper education system and healthcare facilities for the estate people.

"If any leader pledges concerted action in this regard, it would be a deciding factor determining the support of the estate voters", said the Up-country Estate Representatives, Chairman S. Shanmuganathan.

We do not want to toe a political line, instead, we should be able to make an independent decision, considering the promises made by the two candidates.

He said the SLFP candidate, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse had promised that he would provide more job opportunities as well as proper housing, schooling and healthcare facilities.

He said his association would meet the PM when he arrives in Nuwara Eliya District and if he is there to accomplish his pledges, they would put their weight behind the Premier.
