JHU and Muslim Council meet

A delegation from the Muslim Council of Sri Lanka (MCSL), the umbrella body of 58 major Muslim social non-governmental organisations met with the leaders of the Jathika Hela Urumaya recently in Colombo. MCSL is meeting with the major political parties before the presidential election to discuss the issues facing the Muslim community.

MCSL's Interim Steering Committee Chairman N. M. Ameen pointed out the educational backwardness of the minority community. He also went on to echo the Muslim community's call for a fair and just solution to the national issue that recognises the rights of all communities in the North and East.

Ameen handed the JHU leadership the list of concerns presented to the two main presidential candidates earlier by the MCSL. JHU leader Ven. Ellawala Medhananda Thera spoke about the long history of harmonious relations within the Sinhala and Muslim communities.

The Thera emphasised the need to dispel misconceptions spread by the media about the JHU and generate trust within minority communities. The two parties agreed to meet again to draft a programme of action on issue of common concern.
