S. Africa 'A' cruise to easy six wicket win

by Ranjan Anandappa

South Africa cruised to an easy six wickets win over New Zealand in their 'A' team triangular cricket final at the SSC grounds yesterday.

The 'A' teams of South Africa, New Zealand and host Sri Lanka met each other and Sri Lanka 'A' was eliminated from the competition. The New Zealanders despite a fighting batting display from opener Michael Papps (106 n.o.) could score only 216 for 7 in their 50 overs and the South Africans although losing two quick wickets early with the score at 37 batted sensibly to seal the game in their favour.

Besides Papps' 'ton' seasoned Chris Harris (33) and wicket keeper Gareth Hopkin (25) helped the Kiwis to reach the 200 run mark. Harris and Papps added 67 runs for the fifth wicket and took the score from 90 to 157 for 5 when Harris was dismissed for 33 after facing 75 balls without a single boundary.

Papps batted exceptionally well anchoring the innings to be unbeaten on 106 facing 130 deliveries with eight fours and a six. South African Tyronne Henderson provided the early breakthrough taking three quick wickets and Albie Mortel supported him well capturing 3 for 34.

South Africa 'A' chasing a moderate 217 to win off their 50 overs were aided by two useful partnerships first between Bosman (48) and Rudolph who added 78 for the third wicket, and with the dismissal of Bosman, Justin Ontong joined by skipper Jacque Rudolph were engaged in a further 53 run stand for the fourth wicket which swung the game towards South Africa's way.
