Sarasaviya Awards Ceremony :

Celebrities vie for thirty two awards

With only a few days to go for the event of all events in the cinematic arena, speculation is mounting over who will bag the prestigious awards for best movie, actor, actress etc., at this year's Sarasavi Film Awards. Chamitha Kuruppu reveals the line up of events, bound to create a spectacular impact on this year's awards.

The most awaited ritual of the cinema industry, the prestigious Sarasaviya Awards Ceremony will come alive on October 27 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall. The eminent award ceremony will be celebrating its 30 anniversary this year.

Over 20 films that were screened last year will be competing at this years award ceremony to clinch 32 awards. Two lifetime awards to honour their contribution towards the local cinema; Ranapala Bodhinagoda Memorial Award and Ranathisara Award will also be presented at the prestigious night. The veteran Indian film star Jamuna Rani will grace the awards ceremony.

Stepping into the third decade, this year's Sarasaviya Award Ceremony boasts of several special features. Marking another milestone in the history of the Sarasaviya Award Ceremony, seven underprivileged artistes will be felicitated during the event. Main sponsors of the event, the Hatton National Bank will be paying tribute to these seven artists financially while the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Ltd. will offer them a lifetime Insurance Cover.

As a tribute for the contribution towards the country's Tamil Cinema a special award will be presented this year.

The public can vote for their favourite actor and actress this year through the coupons that are published in the Sarasaviya paper. The last date to submit coupons will be on October 25 and the names of the Popular Actor and Actress 2005 will be announced during the award ceremony.

For the first time apart from the Sarasaviya Cinema Week that is held in Colombo a three day Film Festival along with a seminar was held in Kandy last week. Today, the final day of the festival will be screening Randiya Dahara at the Sigiri Cinema Katugastota. The Sarasaviya Film Festival will kick off at the Cine City Maradana on October 19. The schedule is as follows:

October 19 - Suriya Arana

October 20 - Diya Yata Gindara

October 21 - Adaraniya Wassanaya

October 22 - Gini Kirilli

October 23 - Mille Soya

October 24 - Rajju Mala

October 25 - Randiya Dahara
