Sanda Kiri Sayura :

Healing wounded minds through music

by Ranga Chandrarathne

Sanda Kiri Sayura, a collection of songs composed by Shanthi Shirani de Silva was launched recently. The collection aimed at healing the minds of the tsunami affected was a presentation by the Centre for Society and Religion.

It is a commendable attempt at healing the wounded minds of tsunami victims made by a voluntary organisation engaged in humanitarian activities. The songs are based on the calamity that fell on the nation on December 26.It is on the tsunami waves that washed away entire communities. Sri Lanka was the second worst affected country. The songs are to boost the weakened moral of the tsunami affected and to encourage them to turn a new chapter in their lives.

"On a cool December". On a cool December morning The sea stealthily crept towards the land in a totally unexpected fashion.

How it left behind contours of death and destruction! The sea retreated in strategic withdrawal And suddenly attacked

With vengeful tidal waves

Reducing all things to nothingness. How life is just a transition Of one breath to another! How quick the full moon transited into eclipse!

The beauty of the city transformed into a tear The cry of the koha bird, the herald of joy fade away The voice of the "Kanakoka", harbinger of sorrow was heard.

But the flowing tears were wiped awayAn empty hearts were filled by human "Metta, Mudhitha, Karuna".

These songs sum up the tragedy befell on the nation. It all happened in a cold December, the month of merrymaking and when Christmas was around the corner.

All of a sudden, the sea waves smashed inland in an unexpected manner and went back leaving behind a trail of deaths and destructions. The sudden attack was "vengeful" and reduced everything to "nothingness". However towards the end of the song, the composer says that sorrowful eyes were wiped away with loving kindness, equanimity and compassion.

This is the message that the CD intends to convey to the tsunami affected, inspiring them to turn a new leaf in their shattered lives. "From the tidal waves", "Once from a copter", "you little birds", O! might ocean", "Human lives buried" are some of the themes of the songs contained in the CD.

The Centre for Society and Religion appeals for individuals and organizations who are willing to sponsor the cassettes and CDs to be distributed among the tsunami affected. (The Centre for Society and Religion 281, Deans Road Colombo 10).
