Saturday night grooves

by Mahes Perera

Purple Rings

Soft-rocking the Saturday night groovers at the Hilton Residencies are Purple Rings the versatile band of musicians led by guitarist Lakmal Fernando who has the happy knack of reading the music minds of guests and making them stay till the last note for the evening is struck.

Experience has taught him the valuable lesson of not sticking with the old formula, but spreading his wings to take in the best of the changes in music. Hence the repertoire of Purple Rings is a wide stretch from current dance pop hits to the best from the 60's, 70's and 80's, all covers given a Purple Rings stamp in expression.

The other members of the band give ample support. There's keyboardist Krishantha Fernando who chips in on vocals, Fabion Bonnie Paul handles the main load of the vocals with Chamara Mendis providing the rhythmic bass lines.

"I am happy with the performance of the boys, and at the Hilton Residencies we enjoy ourselves playing the requests of the guests. We are fortunate that we were requested to play down South and we now play weekly on Sundays and Thursdays at Taj Exotica Bentota.

On Mondays we are at the Eden Hotel at Moragalla while on Fridays we entertain the guests at the Bentota Beach Hotel. Besides these regular dates we play for weddings and private functions and soon will be handling dances too, now that the season is upon us" comments a friendly Lakmal who enjoys the hard work of keeping a band together.

If you are in Colombo on a Saturday evening wondering what to do, then remember to catch the performance of Purple Rings - you are bound to enjoy yourself.
