Met Dept promises bright weather The weather will improve towards the latter part of the week, after a long spell of wet weather and days of strong winds as a result of early activation of the Inter-monsoon conditions due to disturbances in the lower levels of the atmosphere close to Sri Lanka. The beginning of the week would be generally cloudy, in most parts of the island while occasional showers can be experienced in the Sabaragamuwa, Western, Southern provinces and in the Central Hills, the Meterological Department said. Rain or thundershowers will develop in certain parts in the other provinces during the afternoon and night, a forecaster from the department said. Thundershowers could be expected in Sabaragamuwa, Uva, Eastern and Central provinces. Rain may be accompanied by strong winds of short duration, the official said.Strong winds were reported during last week from Colombo and Medawachchiya while incidents of sea erosion were reported from Western coastal villages Katuneriya and Wennappuwa. According to reports of the Meterological Department Laxapana catchment area has received the highest rainfall of 307.5 mm while Norton and Canyon catchment areas received 282.3 mm, 236.6 mm respectively. The highest temperature recorded for the month so far was reported from Anuradhapura 37.3 Degrees Centigrade on October 7th and the lowest of 11.4 Degrees Centigrade from Nuwara Eliya on the same day. The highest rainfall was received in Katunayaka on October 8 that marked 150.6 mm. (RS) |
