MoH to provide specialist services

by Anura Maitipe

The ministry of Health has implemented five year National plan to provide Specialist Medical services to all parts of the Country, Health Nutrition and Uva Wellassa Development Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva told the Sunday Observer.

This five year plan will be implemented with the help of Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA). Under this program 52 base Hospitals in rural areas will be provided with sub specialities such as general Medicine, General surgery, Paediatrics, Gynaecology, Anaesthesia and Radiology, the Minister added.

These facilities are presently available only at Teaching and General Hospitals in the main cities. This has created great inconvenience to the patients in remote areas. As a result patients in rural areas are compelled to travel long distances to obtain needed specialist treatment, the Minister pointed out.

With the implementation of this program the number of beds in these rural hospitals will be increased by 20,000 and other needed facilities such as surgical theatres, laboratory facilities, radiology facilities and incentive care units will also be provided.

Under the first stage of this program 100 newly trained Medical specialists have already been appointed to some of these hospitals and another 600 medical specialists will be appointed within the next five-year period to all these hospitals, he pointed out.
