SLMC calls for fair media coverage

by Rashomi Silva

Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) on Saturday said they would meet the Election Commissioner this week to seek his assistance for a free and fair media coverage for the all campaigners of the Presidential election scheduled November this year.

"We are hoping to raise three main issues," a senior party official said. They are ensuring a fair coverage for all political parties, to stop political transfers and to appeal against use of public property for political campaigns, he said.

Referring to a recent incident where they said the SLMC wronged a senior official from the party he said: "We have organised a meeting to support the Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in Ninthervur last week. The meeting was scheduled to hold at 7.30 pm, but officials from the Eastern Transport Board arrived at the venue around 3.00 pm, burnt some tires and got a provincial reporter loyal to them to video the empty stage and the burning tyre."

According to the official a state TV channel had telecast the scene and had commented that the SLMC meeting had a low turnout. "We had a tremendous turn out but our political meeting was not given coverage,"
