UPFA Manifesto: Rural economy to the fore

by Jayantha Sri Nissanka

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse's Presidential Election Manifesto will focus on the resurgence of the local economy based on rural economic advancement. The Manifesto is to be released on Tuesday 18.

The Manifesto has given more priorities to develop the rural areas to accomplish 8% GDP growth within a short period, Advanced Technology and National Enterprises Minister Rohitha Bogollagama told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

He said that the Manifesto had given more priorities to lend a helping hand for the local business community that contributes much to the GDP in the country. As a result local businessmen who are involved in trade, tourism, manufacturing, services, etc will gain more benefits to develop their business under the leadership of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse.

The Manifesto aims at extending the Western Province type economic activities to other provinces. As a prerequisite to the rural economic development, an infrastructure development drive will be launched soon in other provinces to achieve balanced socio economic development.

The Manifesto has laid emphasis on providing more facilities for farmers to be gainfully employed. Landless farmers will be given government owned lands for cultivation and facilities will be provided to market their produce.

Youth will be given vocational training after assessing occupational trends in the world in order to find them lucrative employment abroad. Education and health sectors will be given priority to develop and more emphasis will be given to develop these two sectors in rural areas.

Government servants will be given more perks in order to meet the spiralling cost of living. Most of these proposals have been elaborated on by the Prime Minister at many election rallies.
