UNP assures security for UPFA given jobs

by Ananda Kannangara

Former Public Administration Minister and Galle District UNP MP Vajira Abeyawardene on Friday assures that 42,000 graduates who had obtained jobs in the public sector institutions under the "Government's Graduates Employment Scheme" in 2004 will not be removed under a future UNP government. Speaking to the Sunday Observer the former Minister denied various statements made by opposition parties on the graduates recruitment program and the UNP's stand on this issue and reassured that the UNP would never remove any of the graduates from their jobs, although these jobs were given to fulfil an election pledge made at the 2004 Parliamentary Elections.

"We are aware that granting jobs for graduates is very important, but it is a pity to say that this job program was handled by the Government in an improper manner even without adhering to the public administration rules and regulations," he said.

He said due to lack of proper administration of the Government, the majority of graduates were recruited to ministries, departments or other public sector institutions without following the existing cadre system.

"This situation will badly affect the graduates not at the present moment, but at a time when they seek promotions according to their qualifications in the future," he said.

He said that the UNP will focus special attention on this most important issue and make the service of these recruited graduates more viable with new methods in order to extend a better public service to the people in the country. Abeyawardana also recalled how Ranil Wickremesinghe in the capacity of Education Minister instituted the "Graduate Establishment Committee" under the 1977 Government in order to deal with vocational training and employment problems of graduates to provide them with suitable jobs in the public and private sector institutions.
