Election law violators in police net

by Jayantha Sri Nissanka

The Police have arrested 30 persons so far for violation of the election law since nomination day on October 7.

"All these persons have been produced in court. We will strictly implement the law in order to maintain a peaceful election", DIG Gamini Navaratne told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

Police have also detained few Government vehicles which have been used for election propaganda. These vehicles will not be released until the election is over, DIG Navaratne said.

The Police launched a total clean up of election propaganda materials in city walls, roundabouts and other public places islandwide soon after candidates handed over nominations.

Police have stationed decoys in all cities and mobile patrols are in operation to arrest party supporters who paste posters, decorate party colours and cutouts of candidates in public places. Circulars have been sent to all Police Divisions to conduct the election strictly according to the law and arrest anyone who violates election laws.
