Police ensure postal security

by Jayampathy Jayasinghe

Police will provide security to post offices scattered throughout the length and breadth of the country in a bid to prevent pilferage of poll cards and will deploy special mobile patrols to ensure security when poll cards are delivered to households by postmen. This will prevent pilferage of poll cards by unscrupulous elements for impersonation during the forthcoming Presidential Elections, DIG Elections, Gamini Navaratne told the Sunday Observer.

He said IGP, Chandra Fernando had given directions to divisional heads of police divisions to mobilise policemen from 403 police stations to provide security to post offices and postmen engaged in the distribution of poll cards from 25th October to November 11. DIG Navaratne said that according to intelligence reports various political parties have sought assistance from underworld bosses to intimidate voters and to create violence during this period.

Police have appealed to all political parties to desist from engaging underworld characters for election work to ensure a free and fair election. Policemen have been instructed to arrest any undesirable element engaged in any form of thuggery or intimidation of voters at the election day. A special operations room have been set up at the police headquarters to monitor election related incident. The public can contact the operations room regarding election related incident on a hotlines 2327712, or 2327717 or on Fax no 2433671.

DIG Navaratne has also appealed to all political parties not to have political gatherings in unsuitable locations to ensure security to candidates of political parties. Meanwhile the 10,486 polling booths scattered throughout the country will be manned by two armed policemen in addition to armed mobile patrols. The armed services will be deployed to guard key installations, he said.
