Sam Guneratne, Ian Tait in the lead

A number of excellent scores were recorded on the first round of the second group of the 10th SriLankan Airlines Golf Classic 2005 organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and sponsored by the SriLankan Airlines which is currently being worked off at the Victoria Golf Course at Rajawella off Kandy.

This was the third day's play of this prestigious golf championship in which over 255 golfers from 15 countries participated. At the end of the third day's play Sri Lanka's Sam Guneratne with 74 nett leads the nett division while the mens gross division is led by Englishman Ian Tait with 58 gross who is domiciled in Sri Lanka.

Both have completed their two rounds and competition is still open and the winners will be known only after the fourth day's play after adding up the scores of the two rounds of the Second group.

The third day's play in the Mens gross division saw good scores being recorded by Paul Charder (22), Donald Fraser (20), Mark Green (24), Craig Haldain (25), Sunil Jayakoddi (24), Jonathan Jeffrey (30), Errol Johnston (26), Wayno Smith (21), Nimal Wettimuni (30), Sidath Wettimuni (20), Sanjeewa Wickremanayake (26), Jonathan Jeffrey and Nimal Wettimuni with 30 gross strokes are in the lead in the first round of the Second Group.

In the Men's Nett Division on the third day's play good nett scores have been recorded by Richard Abdeen (30), Paul Charder (34), Chi Juang Chong (29), Rowland Davies (35), Chaminda Dissanayake (31), Rohith Fonseka (30), David Freeborn (33), Mark Green (33), Sunil Jayakoddi (30), Jeffrey Jonathan (31), Richard Morris (35), Wayno Smith (31), Sanjay Wettimuni (36), Nimal Wettimuni (33), Sanjeewa Wickramanayake (31). The Ladies Gross Division overall is led by Liz Noble with 45 gross followed by Pat Rodgers 43 gross.

At the end of the first round of the second group Suwaneetha Selvaratnam had done well to record 24 gross Jennifer Rowe and Tangohai Sunanta with 18 gross each. But they all have one more round to play.

At the end of the first round of the second group after third day's in the Ladies Nett Division saw Too Ling Joon and S. Busara record a top score of 37 nett strokes and Sri Lanka's own Manori Jayakoddi too came up with a fine display to record 36 nett. Manori Jayakoddi who has one more round to play, stands good chance to lift the nett title. Others who recorded good scores in this division were Thifaya Anudhira (25), Mary Davies (21), Saw Song Fow (27), Yim Lon Loh (28), Droudpadhi Ramachandra (24), Jennifer Rowe (27).

Liz Noble and Pat Rodgers lead the Ladies Nett Division with 55 nett each having completed their two rounds. But the second group have to play their second round and there could be changes if there are good performances by this group.
