Navy's Fonseka and Santha for Asian Rowing C'ships by Leslie Fernando Two outstanding oarsmen, P. D. S. Fonseka and V. G. N. Santha of Sri Lanka Navy will represent Sri Lanka at the 11th Asian Rowing Championships conducted by Asian Rowing Federation and hosted by All-India Rowing Association to be held from October 18 to 24 Hyderabad, India. Both Fonseka and Santha selection has been approved by the Sports Ministry and will leave tomorrow October 17. Fonseka and Santha are in the national training pool in preparation for the South Asian Games 2006 in Colombo. The rowers are the national champions in the Sculls and Double Sculls. Both will row in the Light Weight Single Sculls and Light Weight Double Sculls along with rowers of 18 other Asian countries. Fonseka won a silver medal and Santha a bronze in the rowing events held for the first time at the 9th South Asian Games held in Islamabad, Pakistan in 2003. Both these oarsmen are from Monaragala and they started rowing after joining Sri Lanka Navy and came to limelight, after participating in several major meets conducted by ARASL. Deva Henry, President Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka said that they will bid to stage the Junior Asian Rowing Championships to be held in 2007 at the Asian Rowing Federation annual congress during the Asian Rowing Championships in Hyderabad. |
