Pension scheme for expatriates by Jayantha Sri Nissanka A "Pension scheme" will be introduced for the benefit of the expatriate community to secure their future, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse said yesterday. The Premier promised to give about 100,000 jobs in Korea, Malaysia and few other countries in 2006 according to the agreement the Bureau of Foreign Employment reached with those countries. He revealed this at a meeting with All Ceylon Middle East Employees Association at Viharamahadevi Park Open Air Theatre. Premier Rajapakse noted that he would introduce a new project to secure the future of expatriate workers who contribute much to the national economy. Youth who are searching for employment abroad will be registered at every District Secretariat and will be provided comprehensive training in jobs which have demand in other countries, he said. The Prime Minister said that measures will be taken to address the problems of expatriate women and facilities will be extended to improve their welfare. "We must send more nurses, naval and computer skilled persons for foreign employment than housemaids. A loan scheme will also be implemented for the benefit of expatriate workers with the help of private and public banks. The Government will contribute 30%" Premier said. Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Rajapakse emphasised that the Mahinda Chinthanaya had given priority for the welfare of the expatriate workers though the UNP candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe had forgotten them in his manifesto. |
